Lino printing with Cathryn and Edna

Linocut is a lovely, tactile printmaking method, originally made popular by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. In this workshop we'll show you some simple techniques for creating your own original artworks, with Edna, our antique printing press; along with methods that you will be able to recreate at home.

Drypoint Printing with Cathryn and Edna

Another traditional printing technique using our antique printing press, Edna.  In this workshop you'll have the chance to choose from a variety of plates, including perspex, aluminium and even Tetrapak packaging, for producing your own original artwork.  The methods used on the day can also be adapted for home printing.

Oak Gall Ink Making and Painting Tim

Create your own ink using this historic technique, and learn how to use it for painting and drawing.

Did you know? oak gall ink was used to write the Magna Carta, the Book of Kells and the American Statute of Independence!

This is a fascinating hands on workshop.

Some recent feedback

“I had the most amazing print day @BrightsideBarn.

Brilliant tutor, amazing food, inspiring company & I had a go at printing with Edna.”

"Thank you for the Lino print course I attended yesterday. It was really lovely. I learnt a lot and you teach it so well, Cathryn. It was great to use a real press- so I was honoured to meet Edna! Also, what can you say about the food? - outstanding springs to mind straight away. Thank you very much - I hopefully will look out for another course in the future."

"Had such an amazing day with my [daughter] at Brightside Barn Art Studio & Gallery enjoying our birthday gift vouchers (21st & 50th) for a #linoprint workshop. Cathryn & Tim's studio is such a wonderful place, and their tuition and artistic guidance is just brilliant. We arrived with limited experience and no clue of what to create and both left with a lovely piece of art to be proud of. The day was filled with great company, absolutely scrumptious food and time to relax and be creative, heaven."

"Thank you Cathryn & Tim, thoroughly enjoyed my day & I'm still full from all the lovely food.

Can't wait to get mine framed & hung up  See you soon."

”I had an amazing day doing a Lino print course at Brightside Barn

with Cathryn Beckett.   Art produced!!!!”

“Wonderful day, great company, brilliant tuition, and the lunch was amazing.”

"I had the immense privilege and joy of meeting Edna. Edna is a star wheel printing press used by David Hockney in the 60s and now living with her artist owners, Tim and Cathryn, at Brightside Barn in the beautiful Eden Valley in Cumbria. Edna is over 200 years old and it felt so lovely to turn her elegant timeworn wooden arms. I was printing a linocut of my dear cat, that I had created on a workshop with printmaker Cathryn Beckett. Cathryn’s excellent tuition was matched by the wonderful vegetarian food cooked by herself and Tim Watson. It was a lovely day in a lovely barn in a lovely location with lovely people!

I can’t wait to return"

“Amazing day indeed - both arty, and delicious”

“Such a fantastic day, thank you so much”

"Had fun and it was lovely food... I didn't feel very creative before coming and was just going to do patterns, and then when I came and was surrounded by creativity it just kicked in..."

"Thank you very much for a great workshop... I will certainly recommend to others."
